The use of raw materials will not only be totally Designated to the production of feed and food . The biofuel industry is becoming the main competitor in using grain, maize and other edible oil containing raw materials. A major discussion is ongoing about who will be the winner with the further development of biofuels. Will it be drivers in developed countries, or poor food consumers in developing countries?
This debate is expected to rise to the forefront in late 2007 or in 2008. Some facts about the use of edible oil are listed below (Baize, 2006).
-- 8.3 mmt of edible oil would be required to supply 5% of US annual transportation-related diesel consumption. That's about 68% of India's total edble oil consumption or about 80% of annual US edible oil consumption.
--The EU already is using more vegetable oil for biodiesel and other industrial uses than is use d annually for all purposes by Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, and Singapore combined.
--US conversion of corn to ethanol in 2007 will be equivalent of that used for all purposes by all of Southeast Asia plus Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and India combined! |
