several species such as bifodobacteria, lactobacillus, enterococcus and saccharomyces boulardi are now used. survival in the GIT and adherence to mucosal cell are considered to be important slection criteria for probiotics activity in human. depending on the definition, the yogurt culture(stroptococus lactis subsp. thermophilus and lactobacilus, bulgaricus) which doesn't survive in the GIT, but which does improve digestion of lactose because of its inherent lactase activity, can also be considered a probiotic.
